the great depression :: bio

the south ain't what it used to be. new urban and suburban lifestyles clash and blend with rural traditions. global awareness infuses town communities with the desire to create new combinations which will hopefully be greater than the sum of their parts.

hailing from several small cities across the mid-south, the members of the great depression have come together in the adopted hometown of memphis, tennessee to combine a wide variety of influences (from bluegrass to blues, from alt-country to hardcore punk) into a dynamic new sound deeply rooted in the songs of the rural south.

after a brief relocation to baltimore, maryland to record their first record (here's to your destruction) in december 1999 and undertake a five week tour of the eastern half of the u.s. in the spring 2000. they moved to memphis in march 2001.

dale naron (vocals, guitar) and john whitaker (bass, harmonies) have been with the band since its inception in 1998. in moving back to memphis, they lost two members only to replace them with stronger and more creative counterparts. with angela horton (of the satyrs) on the drums, and justin loyd on guitar and strum-stick, they recorded a new record (could be never) in july 2001 and are ready to hit the road for two months in the fall to support it.
